A Lesbian Matchmaker’s Perspective on Femininity, Authenticity, and Finding Love Later in Life
If you asked me which women are among the hardest for my clients to find as a professional lesbian matchmaker, my answer would be immediate.
Lipstick lesbians between the ages of 50 and 70.
And, of course, Masc for Masc lesbians generally.
After years of working with queer women, interviewing thousands of women, and privately matching extraordinary lesbians around the world, I’ve noticed that some of the women my clients are searching for can be surprisingly difficult to reach through traditional dating channels.
They’re not necessarily spending every weekend at the local lesbian bar.
They’re not endlessly swiping dating apps.
They’re living their lives.
They’re traveling with their girlfriends.
They’re spending time with their children and grandchildren.
They’re building businesses.
They’re enjoying retirement after decades of hard work.
They’re playing golf and pickleball.
They’re taking cooking classes.
They’re champagne tasting in Napa.
They’re shopping in Milan.
They’re taking cooking classes in Tuscany.
They’ve created full, interesting lives.
And when they’re finally ready to find love, they may not necessarily know where to look either.
That’s one of the biggest reasons some of my successful clients hire me.
What Is a Lipstick Lesbian?
A lipstick lesbian is generally a lesbian who expresses herself in traditionally feminine ways through her clothing, makeup, grooming, fashion, or personal style.
But femininity doesn’t have one universal definition.
For one woman, it might mean a beautiful dress, heels, lipstick, perfume, and a full face of makeup. For another, it might mean tailored clothing, elegant jewelry, understated makeup, or a polished personal style.
And for another woman, femininity might be expressed through the way she creates her home, entertains, travels, or simply carries herself.
There is no single way to be a lipstick lesbian.
There is also no requirement that a lesbian be feminine.
What matters to me as a matchmaker is understanding what femininity means to the individual woman.
Because when a client tells me, “I want a feminine woman,” that statement can mean much more than appearance.

Why Can Lipstick Lesbians Over 50 Be So Difficult to Find?
I want to make an important distinction here.
I wouldn’t claim that lipstick lesbians over 50 are objectively or statistically rare. There isn’t reliable evidence for me to make that claim.
What I can speak to is what I see through my work.
Some women who fit this description can be surprisingly difficult to reach through traditional dating channels. They may be single and genuinely interested in finding a serious relationship, but that doesn’t mean they’re spending hours on dating apps or going to lesbian bars looking for one.
By the time many women reach their 50s and 60s, their lives can already be incredibly full.
They may have established careers, businesses, families, friendships, communities, hobbies, and travel plans. Some are enjoying retirement after decades of hard work. Others are still building companies or pursuing professional goals they’ve spent years working toward.
They may have children and grandchildren who are an important part of their lives.
They may have a calendar full of dinners with friends, vacations, golf, pickleball, cultural activities, and other things they genuinely enjoy.
None of that means they aren’t interested in love.
It simply means they may not be visible in the places where people are accustomed to looking for love.
So perhaps these women aren’t rare. Perhaps they’re simply harder to reach.
Where Are They?
This is one of the questions I hear most often.
Where are the women my clients are looking for?
They’re everywhere.
They’re just not necessarily standing in the places we traditionally associate with dating.
They’re traveling with their girlfriends.
They’re visiting their children and grandchildren.
They’re building companies.
They’re enjoying retirement.
They’re playing golf.
They’re playing pickleball.
They’re taking cooking classes.
They’re traveling to Tuscany.
They’re champagne tasting in Napa.
They’re shopping in Milan.
They’re planning their next beautiful trip.
They’re having dinner with friends.
They’re enjoying the life they’ve worked hard to create.
And that’s an important part of this conversation.
A woman can be single without making “finding a partner” her full-time occupation.
When Dating Is No Longer the Center of Your Life
I think dating can change dramatically as women get older.
When you’re younger, dating can sometimes feel like a central part of your social life. You’re meeting new people, figuring out what you want, discovering your preferences, and learning what relationships mean to you.
By 50 or 60, many women have already gone through several chapters of that process.
They may know themselves extremely well. They may know what they want from a partner, what they won’t tolerate, how they communicate, what kind of lifestyle makes them happy, and what they want their future to look like.
They may also have built a life that doesn’t need to be rescued or completed.
They have careers. They have friends. They have families. They have homes. They have interests. They have stories. They have traveled. They have created independence.
So when they decide they want a relationship, they may not be looking for someone to give their life meaning.
They’re looking for someone to share a meaningful life with.
That’s a very different kind of dating.
And it can also make the search much more selective.
How Women Can Become More Comfortable in Their Own Skin?
I think something beautiful can happen as women get older.
We become more comfortable in our own skin.
For generations, women have received messages about how they should look, dress, age, and present themselves. Society has often rewarded women for fitting particular ideas of beauty and attractiveness.
And whether we like it or not, the male gaze has been part of that conversation.
But eventually, many women reach a point where they simply don’t feel the same need for outside approval.
They’ve built careers.
They’ve raised families.
They’ve created financial independence.
They’ve built businesses.
They’ve created lives they’re proud of.
They’ve developed confidence.
They don’t need the male gaze to feel valuable.
They don’t need it to feel successful.
They don’t need it to belong.
And that can change the way they approach appearance and femininity.
When Comfort Becomes the Priority
For some women, getting older means becoming more relaxed about appearance.
Yoga pants replace dresses.
Sneakers replace heels.
Minimal makeup replaces a full face.
Some women embrace their natural hair.
Some stop worrying about whether they look “young enough.”
And I think that’s incredibly freeing.
Research into clothing and sewing has explored how clothing can relate to identity, the body, self-expression, and how older women negotiate changes in the way they see themselves. The University of Kent’s Centre for Ageing and the Arts has specifically examined the relationship between clothing, ageing, and the body.
But becoming more comfortable doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning femininity.
For some women, it means finally choosing femininity because they genuinely want it.
But Then There Are the Lipstick Lesbians
Here’s what fascinates me.
Some women remain deeply feminine in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.
They’re not doing it for men.
They’re lesbians.
They’re certainly not getting dressed hoping to catch a man’s attention.
They’re doing it because that’s genuinely who they are.
They love the dress.
They love perfume.
They love the beautiful handbag.
They love the fresh flowers.
They love luxury hotels.
They love champagne.
They love getting ready for date night.
They love makeup.
They love planning beautiful trips.
And they may even have had “some help from the Botox girl.”
The point isn’t that every feminine woman shares these interests. It’s that, for some women, femininity itself is a source of joy.
Their femininity brings them pleasure.
That’s what makes it different.
When Femininity Is Authentic
There is a difference between performing femininity and genuinely enjoying femininity.
A woman can wear a dress because she feels expected to.
Or she can wear a dress because putting it on makes her happy.
She can wear perfume because she wants people to notice.
Or because she simply loves the scent.
She can put on makeup because she feels pressure to look a certain way.
Or because she genuinely enjoys the ritual.
That’s the distinction I find so fascinating.
For some women, femininity isn’t an obligation.
It’s a pleasure.
It’s self-expression.
It’s part of their identity.
And that distinction can matter enormously when you’re trying to understand what a client actually means when she says she wants a “feminine woman.”
Why My Clients Hire Me?
Many of my successful clients aren’t simply looking for someone who is feminine.
They’re looking for a woman whose femininity is an authentic expression of who she is.
They want someone who genuinely enjoys beauty, appreciates luxury, and still gets excited about dressing up for dinner, regardless of her age. Someone who loves planning beautiful trips, enjoys creating memorable experiences, and isn’t allowing age to slow down the life she wants to live.
They’re looking for a woman who wants to create a gorgeous life with another woman.
And that’s a much more specific search than simply finding someone who looks feminine.
A woman can wear dresses, makeup, and heels and still have a completely different lifestyle, personality, or vision for the future. What my clients are often searching for is the combination of femininity, authenticity, lifestyle, and relationship compatibility.
Those women absolutely exist.
But they’re surprisingly hard to find through traditional dating channels.
That’s why my Luxury Lesbian™ Matchmaking team and I search beyond the obvious places to find women who may be compatible with what our clients are actually looking for.
We’re not simply looking for a feminine woman. We’re looking for the right woman for the right client.
What Do My Clients Mean When They Say They Want a Feminine Woman?
This is where matchmaking becomes much more nuanced.
When a client says, “I want a feminine woman,” I don’t simply start searching for women wearing dresses.
I ask questions.
What does feminine mean to you?
Are you attracted to a particular physical appearance?
Do you want someone who enjoys getting dressed up?
Do you want someone who loves to travel?
Do you want someone who appreciates luxury?
Do you want someone who enjoys beautiful restaurants and hotels?
Do you want someone who loves traditional romance?
Do you want someone who enjoys creating a beautiful home?
Or are you really looking for a particular lifestyle?
Those distinctions matter.
Because sometimes what a client describes as “femininity” is actually a desire for shared experiences, shared values, and a compatible way of living.
Why Appearance Isn’t the Same as Compatibility
Finding a woman who looks feminine is one thing.
Finding a woman whose life fits naturally alongside yours is something else.
Two women can be incredibly attracted to each other and still want completely different futures.
One might want to spend several months each year traveling.
The other may want to remain close to her children and grandchildren.
One might be ready to retire.
The other may want to continue building her business.
One may love a busy social calendar.
The other may prefer quiet evenings at home.
Neither woman is wrong.
They simply may not be compatible.
That’s why I believe serious matchmaking has to go beyond appearance.
Values matter.
Communication matters.
Lifestyle matters.
Emotional availability matters.
Relationship goals matter.
And when you’re dating later in life, the question becomes less about finding someone who fits your “type” and more about finding someone who fits your life.
Where Do Lipstick Lesbians Over 50 Meet?
There isn’t one secret location.
They may meet through friends.
They may meet through travel.
They may meet through professional networks.
They may meet through LGBTQ+ communities.
They may meet through shared hobbies.
They may meet while playing golf or pickleball.
They may meet at cooking classes or cultural events.
They may meet through social groups.
They may even meet through dating apps.
And some may meet through professional matchmaking.
The point is that there isn’t one place where all feminine lesbians over 50 gather.
Instead, think about where the woman you’re looking for actually spends her time.
If you’re looking for someone who loves travel, culture, beautiful experiences, and an active lifestyle, look for environments where those interests naturally exist.
Why Dating Apps Don’t Show You the Entire Dating Pool
Dating apps can be useful.
They allow women to meet people outside their immediate social circles and can make it easier to discover potential partners.
But they also show you only a particular segment of the dating pool.
You see women who have chosen to join that platform.
You see women who have created profiles.
You see women who are active.
You see women who are willing to date through that particular format.
There are many women who don’t fit into those categories.
They may have tried dating apps before and decided they weren’t for them.
They may dislike swiping.
They may find online dating exhausting.
They may not want to reduce themselves to photographs and a few paragraphs.
Or they may simply be too busy living their lives.
So if you search only through dating apps, you’re not necessarily searching the entire pool.
You’re searching the visible pool.
And those aren’t always the same thing.
How Do You Meet Feminine Lesbians Over 50?
There isn’t one perfect answer, but there are several ways to broaden the search.
1. Through Mutual Friends
A trusted introduction can be incredibly valuable. Friends may know women who would never appear in your dating-app search but could be an excellent fit for your personality and lifestyle.
2. Through Shared Interests
Travel, golf, pickleball, cooking, art, culture, fitness, and other activities can create natural opportunities to meet women who already share something with you.
3. Through LGBTQ+ Communities
Queer communities provide opportunities to build friendships and relationships through shared experiences rather than focusing exclusively on dating.
4. Through Curated Events
For women who are tired of traditional swipe-based dating, intentional events and community experiences can provide another way to meet people.
The Queer Country Club® offers queer women opportunities to connect through community, events, virtual experiences, workshops, and networking.
5. Through Private Matchmaking
For women with specific preferences and serious relationship goals, private matchmaking offers a more personalized approach to identifying potential partners.
What Are Successful Lesbians Over 50 Looking For?
Many successful women already have the things people often spend years trying to build.
They have careers.
They have financial independence.
They have homes.
They have friendships.
They have families.
They have travel experiences.
They have hobbies.
They have built lives they are proud of.
So they may not be looking for someone to complete them.
They may be looking for someone who can join them.
That could mean finding a woman who is emotionally available, independent, confident, adventurous, curious, relationship-minded, and comfortable with her own life.
It might mean someone who wants to travel.
Someone who enjoys dressing up for dinner.
Someone who loves beautiful experiences.
Someone who can spend a week in Tuscany and then happily return home.
Someone who understands that a relationship should add to an already fulfilling life.
Why Lifestyle Compatibility Matters After 50
When you’re younger, you may be willing to figure everything out as you go.
Later in life, you often have a clearer idea of what you want your everyday life to look like.
That makes lifestyle compatibility incredibly important.
Do you want to travel?
How do you feel about retirement?
Where do you want to live?
How involved will the family be?
How do you spend your weekends?
What does financial independence mean to you?
How much social activity do you want?
Do you enjoy hosting?
Do you prefer quiet evenings?
These aren’t necessarily romantic questions.
But they’re the questions that shape a shared life.
And a beautiful relationship isn’t only built during romantic dinners and vacations.
It’s built during ordinary Tuesday mornings, family holidays, difficult conversations, unexpected changes, and everyday routines.
What Does a Lesbian Matchmaker Actually Look For?
When I work with a client, I want to understand the woman behind the profile.
I want to understand her personality, lifestyle, relationship history, values, communication style, attraction, goals, and vision for the future.
I want to understand what she means when she says she wants a feminine woman.
I want to know what makes her feel connected.
I want to understand her non-negotiables and where she may be flexible.
And most importantly, I want to understand the kind of life she wants to create with another woman.
That’s because matchmaking isn’t about finding the largest number of potential matches.
It’s about identifying women who have the potential to be genuinely compatible.
Why Some Women Choose Private Lesbian Matchmaking
For some successful women, the biggest challenge isn’t a lack of options.
It’s time.
They don’t want to spend another year swiping.
They don’t want hundreds of conversations that never become dates.
They don’t want to repeatedly explain what they’re looking for.
And they may value privacy and discretion.
Private matchmaking provides another approach.
Instead of relying entirely on public dating platforms, a woman can work with a professional who takes the time to understand her and search for potential partners who align with her priorities.
There is no guarantee that matchmaking will result in a relationship. Chemistry can’t be manufactured.
But the search can be more intentional, more personalized, and more focused.
Perhaps They’re Not Rare. Perhaps They’re Just Hard to Reach
This is ultimately my theory.
I don’t think we have enough evidence to say that lipstick lesbians over 50 are statistically rare.
But I do believe that some of the women my clients are looking for are surprisingly difficult to reach through traditional dating.
They’re living full lives.
They’re traveling.
They’re spending time with their family.
They’re building businesses.
They’re enjoying retirement.
They’re playing golf and pickleball.
They’re taking cooking classes.
They’re champagne tasting in Napa.
They’re shopping in Milan.
They’re cooking in Tuscany.
They’re enjoying beautiful dinners and meaningful friendships.
They’re not necessarily waiting around for someone to find them.
And when they finally decide they’re ready for love, they may be looking for another woman who understands the life they’ve created.
So perhaps the question isn’t:
“Where are all the lipstick lesbians over 50?”
Perhaps the better question is:
“Am I looking in the places where they actually live their lives?”
